Amusing Teachers' Journal Notes
I'm working on student progress reports before class this morning. We keep a daily teachers' journal on each student. Before I write my progress reports, I read over my notes in the teachers' journal. One of my students consistently didn't do his homework this month. I was curious to see if he didn't do his homework in his other class, too, so I read Catherine's notes in the journal as well. Her entry for May 4th made me laugh right out loud: "very distracted and unpleasant face." Too funny. I wonder what was going on with him that day. I hope no one is keeping notes on when my face is unpleasant.

That cracks me up!
Progress reports were one of my least favorite activities as a teacher, worse than reports cards. All it did was make the students who didn't dress out for PE and were failing upset and gave me angry parents to explain why it was likely their child wouldn't be passing PE this 9 weeks: your child doesn't dress out, so s/he lost points, s/he could have written a note for you to sign to gain back half of their points but refused. And somehow it was still my fault. I'm betting your cute kids did better than my middle schoolers...of course that it explains it all, middle schoolers.
Dear E.M. Herbert,
I stumbled across your blog while researching on places to visit in Jeju, and ended up really enjoying your posts on your experience in Jeju. I also ended up venturing beyond the Jeju posts to read a little about your preschoolers and your musings in (and on) Korea. It is probably a little freaky to find that a complete stranger is reading about your life (I know I'd be freaked), but I've been strangely encouraged by your decision to uproot and live in a country whose language and customs are so different from your own, and want to say that your posts and pictures have blessed me.
I'm Singaporean, and will be visiting Korea and Jeju in a few weeks, so I hope you won't mind if I visit your website for things to do and tips to pick up on Korean culture, food, and customs! (:

Hi mommavia. Progress reports are a real pain, but it seems that parents want them, so we do them. I've heard a rumor that they're going to change the format and make them less time-consuming this summer. There's hope! It's good to hear from you.
Hi Corrine. Thanks for dropping me a note. I get 30-40 visitors to my site a day, but only about half of those are people I personally know. I always wonder about who my mystery visitors are. I'm glad that through my blog, I can share Korea with my friends and family at home and with other people as well. I hope you have a wonderful trip to Jeju! It's a beautiful place. I'm ready to go back!
